FTP Programs

You have finished building your site with our HTML tutorials, MouseOver tutorial, and registered a domain. Now you will need to transfer the site from your computer to the computer where the site will be hosted (usually called the web host, really). All professional hosts and many free web hosts will require you to transfer the web site using an FTP Program, which stands for File Transfer Protocol. A few HTML Editors, including Coffee Cup, will have FTP Programs built in. If your HTML Editor does not contain an FTP Program, you will need to download one in order to get your site on-line. FTP Programs tend to be quite simple and easy to use, and a number of them are offered on the internet for free.

  • CoffeeCup Direct FTP has a free 30 day trial version. This application is packed with user friendly options like allowing you to edit HTML and text, right on the server. See the screenshot at the Coffee Cup site.
  • Filezilla is a free open source file transfer client. It ranks well for reliability, ease of use, and you can't beat the price of free.
  • Ws_FTP is available from the developer site. The LE version is free, and very stable. Screenshot here.
  • For Mac users: Fetch 3.0.3.
  • Linux users go here to choose a version for your distribution: GFTP .
