Web Design for Beginners. Make your Own Website

Welcome to Virtually Ignorant. Web design for beginners starts with basics such as HTML tutorials, registering a domain name, and finding web hosting. We also give you our recommendations on many other issues, which you can see on our GETTING STARTED page. If you prefer, you can skip around the site by the navigation bar on the left. The main sections each have an introductory page to orient you on what is in that section of the site, but you can skip directly to the pages that interest you.

We feature weekly articles on Internet Marketing/Promotion Web Design and Development, and Web Design Tips. We hope you enjoy them.

We have received a lot of emails asking about how to make a website for free. That's pretty much what this site is all about, but here's a quick and dirty list. You can see the expanded version on our Getting Started Page.

  1. Learn HTML -- yeah, sure, there are free graphic editors embedded in your browser, or for download. But then what will you do when there is a problem with your page and you don't know HTML? Just learn the basics, and be on your way! Two steps:
    1. Make A Page Tutorial for basics.
    2. Tables Tutor to learn basic table tags.
Skip the frames, you don't need them, and they ruin search engine listings. Skip the forms tutorial until you need it.
  2. Get a free HTML editor -- Yup, you don't have to lay out hundreds of dollars. If you have a few bucks around, get a slightly fancier one for $30-$60 and feel like a web king or queen. See our HTML Editors Page.
  3. Get a free FTP client -- Believe me, once you use FTP, you will not want to go back up to web-based uploading and all the extra time it takes. It's easy, it's free, it's all spelled out on our FTP Program Page.
  4. Get a free hosting account -- Don't pay for hosting while you're just experimenting. There are plenty of free hosting sites still left. Find the one that's right for you on our Free Hosting Page.
  5. Okay, now put it together! Make your page (your home page will need to be named index.html or default.html depending on your host), upload it via FTP to your free host. Whalla, you just made your own website for free.

We were just given a neat little new toolkit to distribute. The toolkit is free and contains 6 different web making tools including a Mini Site Builder, Drop Down Menu builder, Advanced Meta Tag builder, and an HTML Encryptor tool. This little toolkit might help you out if you're new to HTML. Get our free download today. Click here for free Web Toolbox download. The file is a zip file of a .exe ebook, which is only PC compatible (sorry Mac users!). Unzip it with your favorite unzip utility by clicking on the zip file. Enjoy!

Making your own website is both easy and difficult. Easy, since the internet itself has all the information and tutorials you could need to learn to make your own site. Difficult, since a website is a process. It's never done! Enjoy making your own website, that's the important thing.
